Ok I just finished putting a 16 inch electric fan in my 86. Will this be enough to keep my motor cool. I havent drove it yet, it sitting on jack stands. i was thinking about putting a 12 inch i front of my rad too. You think this will be enough?

water wetter will help, but dont go below a 180 degree t-stat. the cylinders need to get up to temp, and a 160 will cause it to be very slow to warm up. This can and will cause ring issues over time with too much raw fuel in the cylinders

ive had no probs with a 160 in mine. ive never heard that about the 180 t-stat before. lets just put it this way. with a 160 t-stat, water wetter, and a elec fan, sittin in traffic at MW07, my car ran like it did with the 180 t-stat and a stock fan. Ever sence i have done the 160 and all, my car has NEVER even thought about runnin hot (knock on wood).

180 degree thermostat, stock fan/radiator, and water w/slight antifreeze and my ish runs nice and cool.
before the thermostat, it was all over the place.

A 160 will make it run cooler, but it can cause some issues over time. If you have not put a shroud around the electric fan, you need to do that. All of the air needs to be pulled thru. The shroud is the reason the stock fan works. The best thing to do is leave the stock shroud in place, and put in a electric fan.

the water wetter was just to make sure. My fan is mounted in side my shroud. So my car dosent even think about over heating. a 180 in the summer time is just a bit hot for me. no matter what kind of fan u have. its not hard to put a fan in so i really dont see how you would do it wrong, unless its pushin not pullin, and in that case all you do is swap the wires.

water wetter will help, but dont go below a 180 degree t-stat. the cylinders need to get up to temp, and a 160 will cause it to be very slow to warm up. This can and will cause ring issues over time with too much raw fuel in the cylinders He is right about that 100%. One of the larger issues with not getting your motor to temp is that your oil will not offer as much protection as it should. With all of my turbo cars I run my oil into the trans cooler port on the radiator just to make sure that my cylinders and my oil are heating up at the same time. Look up ideal operating temps for the grade oil that you are using and try to keep it at that temp +/-. If you have aluminum heads then I wouldn't let the temps get passed 220 but if you have stockers then mess around with it and try different stuff to try and correct the problem. Also Putting a Push fan and a Pull fan is not helpful to your temp control. One will be a restriction to the other and it will take longer (in theory) for the air to pass through the radiator. Running a bigger fan is not always better, you saw our DSG GT at MW08, I am running 4 9" fans and 2 relays. 1 relay is set to 190 for turn-on and the other is set at 210 just in case something goes wrong with the other 2. I have yet to have my other 2 fans on the 210 come on yet. On the other hand I do have a mark 8 fan that I took off the GT about 1 month ago that I could sell you if yours still doesn't perform. I had the same issues that you are having on my GT for about 3 years, Nothing helped at all. So I ran the Mark8 fan and I have not had a problem for 2 summers with A/C blasting. The only downside to a Mark 8 fan is that it draws the shit out of your car. It never killed anything but you Knew when that bad boy came on! Good Luck Man, I hope you can figure out something that works for you without having to drop big $. If you need anything from me just Email me
