Since I have owned my 88 I have never had a problem with it running warm, the temp gauge usually stays at the lowest bar or the next one up. Even on the mountain run it stayed pretty cool even though it was being run hard. What I'm wondering is that since it never runs really warm and this morning I tried to run the heater and it never got warm at all, did the previous owner take the thermostat out? The coolant tested fine and I know the heater works because I did try it on Saturday late afternoon. Also, at what temp does the thermostat open for a 5.0?

It can run too cool, at lower temps it wont run as good, emissions will rise and it will run rich. The stock 5.0 thermostat is probably a 180-195. The thermostat can be stuck open, the pellet that opens it could be bad or thermostat missing. Just take the upper hose off and see if its in there or stuck open.

A stock thermostat is 195 degree's. I wouldn't recommend putting anything under a 180 degree thermostat in the car. And yes running to cold can hurt the motor.

ford ran a campaign on the late 80s-early 90s engines (especially the 5.0L) about the thermostats opening too soon and leading to sludge buildup inside the oil pan and lifter valley, you might want to go back to a stock thermo.

I'm going to check it this weekend or before Thanksgiving, I'm just hoping that I find that the thermostat is there and just open instead of the previous owner removing it because there were other problems there

i have found that even if a car runs hot (other problems) the thermostat being removed will still let it overheat, but normally more-so than with a thermo.
good luck.
