This discussion actually got started in another thread where I was selling some stuff, but thought I would get more opinions. In my 87, I installed a stock upper and lower intake that was ported, with 1/2 inch spacer, 70mm throttle body and egr spacer, and a cold air kit. My car still has the speed density air control. Would there be a big advantage to switching my car to mass air? I had thought about it, but thought that since I was not doing any major modifications, and none planned in the future, that there was not going to be a big difference in performance if I switched it over to mass air. And sure didn't want to go through the extra work and money if it wasn't going to be beneficial. What are your thoughts, opinions or advice about this?

I would keep it SD for now. You can even add heads and a cam, as long as the cam is not to radical. From the factory the SD cars were quicker then the MAF cars.

The big advantage to Mass Air from SD is a wider variety of camshaft selection. My 88 GT is still SD and is going to remain that way for awhile since mine is a daily driver. There are some SD friendly cams out there and some fast SD cars as well. Just really depends on your thoughts and what you are going to do with the car

Well, like I said...I have no plans for any radical changes. Really nothing more than I have already done. Not planning to race it, so why put so much money in the engine making it stronger? I just want it to have a little pep in its step and to look good all around. In my thoughts, SD was in some ways better because no restrictions in airflow. And everyone knows, less restrictions = better airflow = more power. With the mass air, there is a restriction somewhat for the measurement tubes. But, that was just a thought.

speed density pretty much takes a guess at how much oxygen is in the air. and its based more off a calculation. it uses the tps to see how far the blades are open, and uses some other sensors to guess how much fuel it needs to add, then uses the o2's to get a rough idea of how its doing. the problem is when you introduce better flow, it throws off the calculation because your using more air then the computer thinks your using.
mass air measures the ammount of oxygen present, and can do a much more accurate job of figuring out how much air is entering the engine at any given time/condition.
a lot of LS1 guy who are running huge dry shots or a lot of boost will go back to speed density. but thats for a much more race oriented car. you can still find people to tune speed density cars as well.
for you, i dont think there is much advantage.
